Race #1--And So It Begins!
We will not number each of our races for the blog titles, but there's something about that first race that requires a number label.
We kicked off the new year with a new race! We ran the Predictions and Resolutions 5K. This was a new race for us and we weren't sure how it was going to go. In preparation for our year of running we joined the DC Road Runners Club who was the sponsor of our race today. It was a nice, out and back course, starting at the head of the Mount Vernon Trail in Arlington, running toward Mount Vernon, under the Memorial Bridge and turning around just south of the Memorial Bridge.
There was still a little bit of ice on the course, but for the most part, other than standing water, it was clear.
The race was, what we thought, well attended--maybe 100 people--which made for not so crowded conditions. There were no t-shirts, but there was ChronoTrack-D tag timing which gave us our official times: 26 minutes, 22 seconds. Not a stellar time, but decent.
We realized we overdressed---it was near 40 when the race started at noon and by the 2 km we were both feeling the heat....however, we were happy with out choice of clothing prior to the start of the race and after!
This was the first 5K for both of us--ironic that we've done marathons, but never the shorter distance. Amy's not sure she's very fond of the sprint and Mark finds it amazing that he was a sprint swimmer in college and did not find the running sprint as rewarding.
We should mention that we ate a bit more than we normally would before a race. Amy cooked us a nutritious egg and cheese with fake sausage on whole wheat toast...tasty and maybe a bit heavy two hours before the race.
Regardless, we are excited to kick off our year of competition! Here's to a few more races....
